If the planetary gear has quit spinning then yes you'll need to get in there and replace the gear, whether it be the worm gear or even perhaps the shaft/pinion gear. Get a flashlight and look into the mixer's brush housing holes and you'll see what I mean. If that doesn't fix it you could be looking at getting a new phase-board or control plate.

I have watched Mark's excellent KA repair video and spoken with Josh, but when I get to the part where I have removed the tower holding the worm gear (and other gear) I am totally unable to get the pin out. Yes, Mark taps it with a punch and it flies right out- but mine won't be punched out or pulled out- and I fear doing damage with repeated swings and misses. What am I doing wrong?

Do I drill out the pin and buy a new one? Do I admit defeat and pay a certified KA repair person, or gasp, buy a new mixer because I have been defeated by a small pin?
Since seeing Mark's video I have become a loyal link removed fan. Please don't fail me. My dining table is lined up with mixer parts and my kitchen counter is empty- a very sad state of affairs. Hi Diane, There are two important factors when trying to remove a stubborn pin. First, Make sure that the gear tower is firmly supported when you are tapping on the pin. I use a flat surface on a bench vise when I work on them. The vise isn't going to move or allow any bouncing of the tower.

The second tip is to use a punch that has a flat face and that is as close to the size of the pin as possible. If the punch is too small it will flair the end on the pin, too big and it will damage the tower gear shaft. I hope this advice helps!
